Time Commitment: Sessions will generally run from 7:00 to 9:00 am.  Times may change based upon the weather or schedule conflicts.  Athletes are expected to be on time and picked up right after practice.

What to expect: Practice will be held on the water unless conditions are not safe to row (lightening or heavy rain/flooding).  If that happens we will row indoors on the ergometers (rowing machines) and go through the basics of rowing biomechanics.  Each athlete will need to wear rowing shorts or biking shorts to practice.  You must bring at least 64 oz. of drinking water to practice each day as there is no running water.  Porta-Johns are available in the park.   Hats and sun screen are suggested as we move in to the summer.   Coach Kaehler will have additional water available at the boathouse facility.

Athlete’s requirements:

Each athlete will need to pass a 100yd swim test which is witnessed and signed by a local swim club.   Parents must sign the US Rowing Waiver (provided), and participants must become members ($45/yr) of US Rowing.  This is a true team sport we expect all athletes to show up for all sessions unless they are sick, or have an excused absence.  If an athlete has more than two excused absences he/she may not be permitted to continue.

BCRA Launch/Dues:

Practices will be run by Coach Kaehler unless otherwise noted.  The launch will have (4) US Coast Guard approved life preservers.

Athletes will not have to join the BCRA for this summer camp.  If participants choose to continue with rowing at BCRA beyond this they will need to become members.

Program:

Cost: $575 per athlete which is payable to “Coach Kaehler, LLC”.  *  Each session will run if we have 2 or 4 participants.

Fees include – Camp tuition, boat rental, registration fees and video analysis.

Please contact Coach Kaehler to receive the application for the camp.

The rowing stroke encompasses two types of strokes, sweep or sculling. Rowers who sweep row use 1 oar to propel the boat, while sculling utilizes 2 oars. While although the vast majority of rowing at the collegiate level is sweep rowing, the sculling stroke serves as the foundation for all rowing. Sculling allows the rower to learn the more subtle aspects of the sport, and if desired move in to a single man boat. It also allows the rower to translate the sculling technique to sweep rowing where they can be proficient in all seats of a sweep boat (a four person or eight people) on either side, port or starboard

Coach Kaehler/BCRA sculling clinics are ideal in that these sessions are designed specifically to introduce the art of sculling to novices (One year or less).  By limiting enrollment to a few athletes per sessions, the novice rower will get in-depth coaching on the basics of rowing.

The Novice Rower
The clinic is designed for boys or girls who are interested in learning the basics of rowing but have no experience. Each athlete will be assigned to a 4 man boat where they will receive on-the-water instruction in the basics of the rowing stroke. The initial days of the clinic will focus on getting acclimated to the boat and the complexity of the rowing stroke. By week’s end, it’s expected that the students will demonstrate proficiency in sculling and will be able to row at higher stroke rating. Many of our novice rowers have continued on in the sport and have progressed to individual sculling.
